A threshold is defined as an entrance, a boundary or the start of something. We are all familiar with the door stop threshold which we step over as we cross into the space within. There are also event related thresholds. For my generation the 21st birthday was seen as the official arrival of adulthood.
A generation later the threshold had changed and now the 18th birthday was seen as the marker for the status change.
